Limes

Limes – not just for margaritas! These little green powerhouses pack a punch when it comes to health (and home!) benefits. Let's explore why it’s worth having a few in the fridge.

Lime Light

We’ve looked at lemons, now let's talk about their zesty cousin; the lime. These little green wonders aren't just for adding a pop of flavour to your margaritas; they've got some serious health and home perks too. So, grab a lime (or two) and let's dive into why you should make them a staple in your life!

  1. Immunity Push: Limes are packed with vitamin C, which is like a superhero for your immune system. A squeeze a day might just keep those sniffles away! And don’t forget that Vitamin C helps your body absorb iron, so a meal that’s high in both (think a tofu stir fry with a generous squeeze of lime juice!) is a super combo!

  2. Digestion Boost: Squeeze some lime juice on your food to help your stomach out, because they actually help your saliva break down the food better! It's like giving your digestion a little boost. It also looks like limes and other citrus fruits can help lower the risk of kidney stones!

  3. Hydration Station: Add some lime slices for a flavour upgrade in your water. It's like fancy spa water, but way cheaper. Plus, it helps flush out toxins and keeps you feeling fresh.

  4. Glow Getter: Want that dewy skin glow? Whip up a DIY face mask with lime juice and honey. Your skin will thank you later!

These are just some of the amazing benefits of the wonderful lime. But how do you use it?

In the kitchen:

Like I mentioned above, a stir fry is the perfect place for a big squeeze of lime juice (try some in my Egg Fried Rice!), it’s perfect in marinades, salad dressings and also squeezed over sea food, pork or chicken. Just a little mixed in with your coleslaw or potato salad to brighten things up works brilliantly too! Basically, anywhere that you need something acidic, you can try lime instead of lemon or vinegar to see if you like it as an alternative. And the more you cook, the more you’ll trust your instincts and taste buds and you’ll know exactly when to go for a little addition of lime juice and zest. Don’t forget - it works perfectly in desserts too, a gorgeous companion to sweet dairy or coconut based treats!

In your home:

  1. Cleaning: Want to avoid harsh chemicals? Of course you do! Mix up some lime juice with water and vinegar for a natural cleaner that actually works.

  2. Smell Be-Gone: Got funky odors lingering around? Stick some lime halves in the fridge or waste disposal to freshen things up.

  3. Laundry Day: Give your laundry a tropical holiday and say goodbye to musty-smelling clothes with a splash of lime juice in the wash!

  4. Waste Disposal Freshener: If your kitchen has a waste disposal, chuck your used citrus fruit in last, it will freshen up the disposal and leave a pleasant smell!

In a nutshell, limes are fantastic both when it comes to your health and your home. They're versatile, affordable, and they smell pretty amazing too! So don't forget to stock up on limes (they last a long time in the fridge!) – your taste buds and your cleaning supplies will thank you.
