Nutmeg Health Benefits
A friend to sweet and savoury alike.
From baked goods to meatballs, nutmeg elevates cooking hugely. But I realised I had no clue about this spice, where it’s from or - if it has any health benefits! This is what I’ve learned about the nutmeg after researching:
Nutmeg is a seed, from the evergreen tree Myristica fragrans, native to Indonesia.
It is another spice that gets you lots of powerful antioxidants. As you may already know, antioxidants are compounds that protect your cells from damage by free radicals (which cause oxidative stress and can start or progress chronic illness in your body)
Like some similar spices, ginger for example, nutmeg has anti-inflammatory properties. This includes some of the before-mentioned antioxidants. Again, great to help avoid/prevent chronic illness and pain in the body.
There are some studies that suggest that nutmeg might help your sex drive! It is used for this purpose in some types of medicine, but more research is required.
Nutmeg has antibacterial effects against harmful strains of bacteria. For example, it can inhibit the growth of E.coli bacteria!
It’s another food that might help boost your mood, and it looks like it might benefit both hearth health and blood sugar levels.
So you can safely sprinkle some ground or grated nutmeg in your chai latte, mix in with your meatballs, curry or in a delicious pie! Or maybe in some Scandi style meat cakes?
