When Life Gives You Lemons

When Life Give You Lemons - The From Scratch Body

Life should give us more lemons. Because lemons are awesome and versatile!

For your body and your chopping boards!

Lemons are great for your health. They contain plenty of vitamin C for your immune system and heart, and citric acid can help prevent kidney stones. They also help your body absorb iron in other food. Fantastic! Plus, let’s face it, it’s super tasty with a bit of lemon zest in a homemade cake, it adds that lovely zing in a fruit based recipe (like a fruit pie), and some lemon juice squeezed over fish or a few slices submerged in your fridge water makes all the difference. But lemons can sometimes be forgotten in the fridge and suddenly they might look a bit tired and not so tempting to put on a plate or in your water. Fear not, there are great uses for it around the house, so nothing goes to waste!

Non-food uses for your lemons:

  • Run the cut side half a lemon across your chopping boards to help get stains and strong smells out of it easier - clean afterwards.

  • Got tough stains on your clothes (including rust stains and yellow sweat stains)? Try a mix of lemon juice and salt to get them out!

  • Run the cut side of half a lemon over your sinks and taps (both in the kitchen and in the bathroom) for a super lovely, shiny and great smelling clean!

  • Great for cleaning your blender/food processor: you know how it can be hard to get your plastic bowls for your food processor or blender totally squeaky clean looking? Well, try to run this through it: a lemon (whole or half, whatever you’ve got), a pinch of baking soda, a cup of water and a couple of drops of dishwasher soap. When you rinse it out, it will have got rid of that “cloudy” look to your plastic bowl!

Also know that for cooking purposes, you can freeze both lemon slices, wedges and zest! So if you love actually tasting the lemon in your food and drinks, but want to ensure that you get to use the lemon before it goes off, this is a great habit to get into. Just slice or grate the lemon and store it in containers or fridge bags.
